CALF COMPETITION
ANDREWS SHIELD AT OMATA. WORK OF THE CHILDREN. The calves entered for the Andrews Shield were judged at the Omata school on Monday afternoon. There was a good attendance of parents and others, including Mr. Dill-Macky, the Education Board’s instructor, and M. A. E. Washei, president of the boys and girls’ clubs. Mr. G. H. Bell, Oakura, was the judge. The chairman, Mr. B. C. Kurth, outlined the rules of the competition. He said the object was to give credit to the children for their work, and to that end more points were allotted for general care of the calf than for type. Mr. E. Andrews, donor of the shield, and Mr. L. A. McHardie, headmaster, spoke of the value of such competitions in instilling in the children a love for animals.
Seven calves paraded for the junior division and three in the senior. The results were:—Senior: Rita Berridge 1, Leo Berridge 2, Alan Kurth 3. Junior: Joyce Wilton 1, Ngaire Bayly 2, Jack Graham 3.
At the conclusion of judging Mr. Bell gave a talk on the care and management of calves. He explained the points to be looked for in a dairy calf and gave his reasons for placing the calves as he had done.
Mr. Washer and Mr. Dill-Macky referred to the value of such competitions arid complimented the committee on its enterprise. Mr. Kurth thanked Mr. Andrews for giving the shield and the women’s committee for supplying afternoon tea.
