GIRL GUIDE RALLY

LADY BADEN-POWELL WELCOMED. TARANAKI PARTY RETURNS. Cheerful and excited, the party of Taranaki Girl Guides and Guiders, who attended a camp at Trentham last weekend in honour of Lady Baden-Powell, returned to their homes on Monday. The general opinion was that the trip had been completely successful. On arrival at the camp on Saturday morning, the Guides were divided into sections, each of which was allotted a separate duty, such as cleaning or wash-ing-up. The girls cooked their own meals and lived in camp fashion, though they slept in the racecourse pavilion. Saturday afternoon was spent mainly in rehearsing for various displays at a monster camp fire and tea held near the bush. Each district gave its display and a fire-lighting competition was held, the object being to improvise a plate, tray and a cup of tea and carry it to Lady Baden-Powell. The BroWnies made a tableau of a birthday cake, and Lady Baden-Powell was presented with a knife eight feet long. The Brownies stepped back as Lord and Lady Baden-Powell moved into their midst, and revealed a real cake in the centre of the group. Sunday was “Thinking Day,” the nearest Sunday to February 26 always being set aside for tire “thinking day” service. ' There was a combined march past before the Chief Guide, her two daughters, and Miss R. Herrick, the New Zealand chief commissioner. Lady Baden-Powell having addressed the gathering, the girls were free for the afternoon. In the evening another camp fire and talk were held.

The Taranaki contingent broke with the rest at 8.30 on Monday morning.
