ORGANISATION TRIUMPH

VISITING OFFICIALS’ PRAISE. NO HITCH FROM CHANGED VENUE. Appreciative comment upon the splendid organisation of the carnival yas heard on all sides from visiting officials, who characterised the arrangements for the last-minute change-over from Fitzroy to Ngamotu as perfect. With all details in hand for the holding of the events at Fitzroy, the realisation at noon of the need for a change with less than three hours’ notice imposed a strain that no organisation could be reasonably expected to cope with. Nevertheless by three o’clock enclosures had been roped off at Ngamotu, a loudspeaker service installed, tents erected and gatekeepers stationed. Events were run off swiftly and by lunch time yesterday the three hours’ lost time in a programme carefully scheduled to a timetable had been made up. Throughout the whole week-end the only obstruction was the uncontrollable tendency of the public, nearly 5000 strong, to break the bounds of the enclosure. The main officials. were: Referee, Mr. V. L. Allen; marshal, Mr. M. Smale; assistant-marshal, Mr, N. Ingram; marshal’s steward, Mr. S. M. Smith; judges, Messrs. P. D. Edwards, R. G. Howell, N. Berge, C. E. Jago, S. G. Fraser, Charlie Brown, Len Brown and Gardiner; starter, Mr. H. S. Weston; computing steward, Mr. W. A. Sharp; council secretary, Mr. F. Chapman; local secretary, Mr. R. H. Perkins; secretaries’ assistant, Mr. A. Ross; organising committee, Messrs. H. S. Weston, R. G. Howell, N. Berge, A. C. Sims, Neville Gardiner, J. Devine and R. H. Perkins. New Zealand executive officials present were the president, Mr. P. Coira, and Messrs. N. Allen, N. A. Ingram, H. Dickson and J. Alexander. Royal Life Saving Society representatives present were Messrs. J. C. Fishenden (London), G. E. Billson (Christchurch) and H. J. Ballin (Christchurch).
