RED CROSS COUNCIL

ACTIVITIES IN SOUTH TARANAKI. HOME NURSNG INSTRUCTION. A welcome to tire Red Cross movement in South Taranaki was accorded Sister N. Thomas at the quarterly meeting of the South Taranaki Red Cross Council at Kaponga on Thursday. The president, Mr. Ira J. Bridger, said that although the system of control was a little different the class of work was practically, the same, the nurse being now known as Red Cross and district nurse. They had been without a nurse during the past twelve months and the loss had been felt very much indeed. Now that Sister Thomas had taken up duty the organisation was again complete and he felt sure that she would be warmly received by the members of all the branches in South Taranaki. Also present were Mesdames Veitch, King, Warner, Miss Bryant and Sister Thomas (Hawera), Mesdames Goldsmith and Reakes, secretary (Eltham), and Mrs. J. Guy (Kaponga). Opunake, owing to the absence from the district of its delegates, was not represented. The chairman reported a circular which had been sent to women’s institutes and W.D.F.U. branches in connection with the extension of the home nursing classes conducted by the Red Cross Nurse. Home nursing classes had been arranged for Kaponga on Mondays, Eltham on Tuesdays, and Hawera on Thursdays. Classes are also to be established at Opunake. Mrs. King, junior Red Cross organiser, reported upon work carried out. Upon her recommendation it was decided that banner competition be held in March each year instead of during the busy period in December. Difficulty was being experienced regarding transport and it had not been possible to carry out instruction at all the schools visited by Sister Small. The council decided that as it, was not possible to provide transport for this purpose under the new Red Cross nurse arrangement the selection of schools to receive tuition I e left in the hands of Mrs. King. Discussion ensued upon a request from headquarters for the levy from South Taranaki amounting to £42. In pointing out that this meant an amount of over £lO for each branch, the chairman stressed the necessity of financing head office. Eltham had already sent £5 and was shortly completing its contribution, It was realised that the smaller branches would experience difficulty in meeting the levy but he appealed for public support for the movement, which was unquestionably of public benefit. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the council at Opunake in April.. .. ........ Authority was given for necessary repairs to the Red Cross car. Mrs. Guy was accorded a vote of thanks for the use of her home for the meeting.
