REVENUE INCREASE

CROW’N LANDS AND FORESTRY. SIGNS OF BETTER TIMES. Signs of improving economic conditions, which were to be found in the revenue of two of the departments under his control, were pointed but by the Minister of Lands. Hon. E. A. Ransom, during the second reading debate on the Mortgage Corporation of New Zealand Bill in the House of Representatives. Increases had taken place in the revenue of both the Lands Department and the Forestry Department, he said. Last year the Lands Department received in revenue more than 25 pej cent, ih excess bf the amount received the previous year. For the nine months ended December 31. 1934. the department’s ordinary revenue increased by £312.443 above the amount. received for the corresponding period bf ,1933. This represented ah increase bf 56.21 per cent. Dicharged soldier settlement revenue increased by £138,210, br 17.67 per cent. The total increase was £450,653 br 33.66 per cent. So far as Crown tenants were concerned thev had been able to meet their payments tb the extent bf that larger amount. For the nine months ended December 31, 1933, forestry revenue Was £33,341 as against £48,685 for the nine months ended December, 1934. This was an increase of £15,344 br 46.2 per cent The improvement in forestry revenue was largely due to the improved position of the building industry. To a certain extent the increase in timber exports overseas had also assisted. The milling industry was improving and that was a direct indication of conditions in the Dominion generally.
