At the Moonee Valley races Cape Fair was second to the Australian Cup entrant Highardo in the Compensation Handicap. Epigram was unplaced in the Moreland Handicap and- Wheriko unplaced in the Magdala Welter Plate. Voitre’s had been in keen demand for riding work since his arrival from the Dominion.- He rode a number of mounts, including Cape Fair, at today’s races.

j NEW STARTING GATE. f GREATER SAFETY FOR RIDERS. London, Feb. 19. The Jockey Club has. adopted anew // starting gate in which a net is extended ■ over webbing in order to prevent the jockeys and horses being caught in the strands when attempting to get off speedily, says the Daily Mail. This is a common occurrence since a sturdier gate was installed in 1929, causing several riders to be thrown and severely 'injured. HUNTIQUE FOUND SHOT IN LEG. WINNER OF GRAND NATIONAL. The gelding Huntique,'which won the Grand National Hurdles last year, was found in a paddock near the Waterlea racecourse yesterday with the bone of * hind leg shattered by a bullet. Th®. ./ animal had to be destroyed. The manner in which the injury was sustained is a mystery, but the empty shells of two .303 cartridges were found nearby. ... '' ■
