SHORTAGE OF WATER
RESTRICTION AT WELLINGTON.
STORAGE BECOMES VERY LOW.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 6. Absolute prohibition of the use of water'’ for Ornamental purposes, such as fountains, ponds, etc., and the watering of gardens by hosing, has been imposed by the Wellington City Council. This applies to all installations whether by meter or not, and non-compliance will be followed by prosecution. It is pointed out that if the storage gets much lower the quality of water may deteriorate and the quantity available for fire fighting will be much reduced.
The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, has issued_ an appeal to citizens to observe the restrictions on the use of water. He points out that at the present rate of consumption the supply of palatable water will last only 30 days if the present conditions continue. In the absence of rain after that period the supply would cease entirely. While such a period of drought would be unprecedented, it was essential to take precautions. Every effort is being made to push on with an auxiliary artesian supply to avoid a recurrence of the present position in the future. -
