FLOODING OF THAMES
HIGHER THAN FOR MANY YEARS. TUBE RAILWAY NARROWLY SAVED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. f London, Feb. 6. The river Thames is higher than it has been since the floods of January, 1928. The water at the Victoria Embankment is four feet above normal at high water. Somerset House vaults are flooded and the underground railway from Westminster to Blackfriars was only saved by a special gang of pumpers called up for 100 miles along the Thames. Officials are anxiously watching the rising tides, which are due to a northeast gale from Norway. Many basements in riverside houses are already flooded. The police are preparing to warn affected areas if there is the least danger of a recurrence of the disasters of 1928, when whole families were surprised and drowned in their beds.
