GRANT BY COUNCIL
MONEY FOR RELIEF OF DISTRESS. ' CHRISTCHURCH CITY DECISION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. To provide money for the relief of distress at Christchurch and to recompense the Metropolitan Relief Association for extraordinary expenditure during the past fortnight, which has exhausted the available funds, the Christchurch City Council decided to-night to make available £2850 from the municipal electricity department’s funds, which are in credit. This action was taken subject to the approval of the Government, as the Mayor, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., explained that an Act of Parliament would be necessary to validate the council’s action. ‘
A petition signed by 1000 relief workers asking the Government for an increase of 10s a week in the wages of relief workers was supported by the council.
