MONICA WINS THIRD RACE.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Half Moon Bay, Last Night.
-By winning the fourth race in the Sanders Cup contest held this afternoon in Patersdn Inlet? the Irene (Canterbury) retains the trophy. The race held in the morning resulted in a win for Monica (Wellington). The Irene won the first two races.
Times of the fourth race were: Irene, 2h. 30m., 4h. 33m. 275., 1; Monica, 2h. 30m., 4h. 33m. 505., 2; Betty, 2h. 30m., 4h'. 36m. 445., 3; Evelyn, 2h. 30m., 4h. 40m. 18s;, 4. The stdrm had passed away this morning and the'smooth surface of Paterson Inlet was just ruffled by a light northerly breeze when the third race for the Sanders Cup began at 10.30. A large crowd of spectators packed the launches and lined the shore. The Irene was the general favourite, but the altered weather conditions raised the hopes of the Monica’s supporters. The four boats got away to a good start and all broke out their spinnakers for the run before the wind. As they neared the lee mark all were close together, but the Monica rounded the buoy a few-seconds ahead .of the Betty, with the Irene ne and the Evelyn last. The beat against the wind was a battle of tactics between the Monica and the Irene. The former's skipper outmanoeuvred the Canterbury man to round the weather buoy about 15 seconds ahead, with the Betty 10 seconds behind and the Evelyn 20s. back - last. On the run to the lee mark for the second time, the same order was maintained. Another battle of wits began. The Monica kept her lead but nearing the end of the second round the Irene’s peak carried away, giving the Monica a two minutes lead commencing the third round on the Betty with the Evelyn just heading the Irene,.who was again under way. '. • The Wellington boat increased its lead On the last run before the wind to turn the mark a minute and a-half ahead of the Betty, which was half a minute clear of the Irene, with the Evelyn last. The Monica. started to beat up against the wind and the Irene made a long leg to leeward on the chance of gaining a wind advantage. The Betty lay second and the Evelyn last, but the Irene was gradually tacking up and headed the Betty. The Monica and the Irene now made short boards all the time, but the Monica kept a clear lea . and passed the finishing mark a minute and a-half ahead of the Betty, who was a minute clear of the Irene, with the Evelyn well back.
The race roused great enthusiasm and the win was very popular. Mackenzie, and his crew handled the Monica with great skill and she appeared to be a better boat under the existing splendid weather conditions.
The official times were: Monica, lOh. 30m., llh. 19m. 505., 1; Betty, lOh. 30m., 12h. Im. 275., 2; Irene, lOh. 30m„ 12h. Im. 495., 3; Evelyn, lOh. 30m., 12h. 2m. 365., 4.
