SENSATIONAL SMASH
TWO JOCKEYS SERIOUSLY HURT. WILLIAMSTOWN RACE MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 9.45 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 28. A sensational smash occurred in the Laverton Hurdle Race at the Williamstown meeting, two jockeys receiving serious injuries. The course record was broken in the same race. The smash occurred at the first hurdle in the straight. Zetheus, ridden by W. Nelson, and Purple Cap, ridden by D. Wraight, fell heavily, and Lanour, ridden by T. Reardon, toppled over them. Nelson suffered a broken collarbone and Reardon broke his leg. Wraight escaped injury. Results are:— LAVERTON HURDLE RACE: DARK MAN, 9.7 (Meredith) 1 OUR COMET, 10.7 (Hynes) 2 BUMBURNIE, 10.5 (Sweetnam) ...... 3 Ten started. Five lengths; four lengths. Time, 3.36 J. C. F. ORR STAKES. BREAK UP, 8.4 (Olsen) .:........... 1 OGWELL, 8.4 (Maher) 2 GAINE CARRINGTON, 9.13 (Douglas) 3 Seven started, including Epigram. Neck; head. Time, 1.434. AUSTRALIA DAY CUP. PICATUS, 8.4 (Breasley) 1 EASTERN CHIEF, 8.3 (Elliott) 2 ROBERT, 7.4 (Percival) 3 Eleven started, including Queen Helen. Long neck; length. Time, 2.1935.. Lady Primrose was second in the Juvenile Handicap.
