SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS
TARANAKI EVENTS WELL FILLED. WEEK-END MEETING AT OPUNAKE. The first attempt at running the Taranaki Surf life-saving championships on a really large scale by holding a twoday meeting at Opunake on Saturday and Sunday week, has been given a rousing start by an excellent response in entries by clubs. All Taranaki clubs are represented and Castlecliff (Wanganui) is also sending teams. The reason for holding a meeting oil such a scale is largely to perfect the organisation for the New Zealand championships to be held at Fitzroy a fortnight later. The main championship events and entries are the Tabor Shield, Taranaki senior (8), the clubs junior premiership (4), the pennant (8), Weston Cup 4-man event (14), Taranaki march-past (9), Ballin Cup surf relay race (8), and beltman’s championship (10). In addition there is the Patea Beach Shield (8), chariot race, surface race, land drill display, beach belt race and beach relay race. The first of the events on Saturday is the Weston Cup commencing at 2.30 p.m. The draw, with the beltman’s name where known, is: First heat: New Plymouth Old Boys (N. Gardiner), Opunake (G. Harrison), Patea B, Fitzroy (R. Voullaire), East End (MacFarlane). Second heat: Castlecliff B. East End (L. Eddlestone), New Plymouth Old Boys (B. Dudley), Fitzroy (McLean), Opunake C. Third heat: Opunake (P. Burton), Castlecliff (Tasker), Fitzroy (Gardiner), Patea A. For the second event, the pennant competition, the draw is: First heat: Opunake junior, Old Boys-New Plymouth Boys’ High Schodl, Fitzroy B, Patea. Second heat: Opunake, New Plymouth Old Boys, East End junior, Fitzroy A; The final of the Weston Cup is to be followed by the Patea Beach Shield, the draw for which is: First heat: New Plymouth Old Boys, Patea, Opunake pennant team, Castlecliff. Second heat: East End, Fitzroy, Opunake senior, Old Boys-New Plymouth Boys’ High School. A chariot race, the Patea Beach Shield final, and the individual surface race conclude the first day’s programme. Sunday opens with the beltman’s championship, the draw being: First heat: B. Ryan (Ohawe), R. Voullaire (Fitzroy), P. Burton (Opunake), Patea, MacFarlane (East End). Second heat: G. Harrison (Opunake), H. St. George (Fitzroy), B. Dudley (Old Boys), C. McLean (Fitzroy), Tasker (Castlecliff), The pennant and beltmen’s finals then follow. The entries for the next event, the Taranaki junior club championship, are: Old Boys-New Plymouth Boys’ High School, Opunake, Fitzroy, and East End. The order of the teams in the Taranaki march past for the Grey Shield and Anson Cup is: Castlecliff, Patea, Opunake, New Plymouth Old Boys, Fitzroy, Ohawe, East End, Opunake junior, Old Boys-New Plymouth Boys’ High School.
Two heats have been drawn for the Tabor Shield Taranaki club championship, the draw being: First heat: Patea, Old Boys-New Plymouth Boys’ High School, East End, Castlecliff. Second heat: New Plymouth Old Boys, Ohawe, Fitzroy, Opunake. Until the last event, the Ballin Cup surf relay race, the programme comprises a chariot race, land drill display by Opunake, Tabor Shield final, beach belt race, and beach relay race. For the Ballin Cup relay race the order of the teams is: Castlecliff, Ohawe, New Plymouth Old Boys, Opunake, East End, Fitzroy, Old Boys-New Plymouth Boys’ High School, Patea. The judges for the four-men events are Messrs. L. Brown, N. Berge, and G. S. Fraser, for the pennant heats, Messrs. W. H. Haggett, G. S. Fraser, and H. S. Weston, and for the Patea Shield Messrs. W. H. Haggett, N. Berge and H. S. Weston. Mr. G. E. Jago and two others will judge the march past, while further judges will be appointed later.
