A motor-lorry Joaded with sheep went over a 30-foot embankment on the Omoana hill on Saturday. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels and was not seriously damaged. The driver, Mr. C. Maslin, escaped without injury, but two of the sheep were hurt. Eltham Croquet Games. Mrs. C. Cooper and Mrs. A. R. Gower were the winners of the January competition on the Eltham croquet lawns. Last week the honorary members were entertained, Mrs. A. Ware winning the prizes for French and golf croquet. The members’ prizes went to Mrs. C. Cooper (French croquet) and Mrs. J. Bates (golf croquet). “Merry-go-round” and double competitions are being held and are proving interesting innovations. The prizes have been given by Mesdames F. Townsend, R. J. Pepperell and J. D. McKay. MATA DISTRICT NEWS. FAREWELL TO MR. S. DAVIDSON. An enjoyable evening was spent in the Mata hall last Friday night when a farewell social was tendered Mr. S. Davidson, who is leaving the district for the South Island. The evening was spent in games and dancing. Mr. S. Ward presented Mr. Davidson with a travelling rug and expressed regret at his departure from the district. As a cricket enthusiast he would be missed. Mr. Trask also spoke. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss G. Oldfield and J. Martin and Miss J. Old and W. Worthington. The music was played by Miss N. Prince, with extras by Miss R. Jordan and A. Trask. Mr. S. Ward was master of ceremonies. Mrs. G. Adam left for Waverley on Sunday, en route to Palmerston North. Mr. S. Davidson left for the South Island on Monday. ELTHAM TALKIES. “PRINCESS CHARMING.” “Princess Charming,” to be shown at the Eltham Theatre to-night and to-mor-row night, may easily be described as a gay, sparkling romance. Evelyn Laye repeats the role in which she enjoyed success on the stage. A splendid cast appears with Evelyn Laye, including Yvonne Arnaud, George Grossmith, Max Miller, Ivor Maclaren, Frances Sullivan and Ivor Barnard. Maurice Elvey directed the picture. The music, by Ray Noble, with lyrics by Max Kester, is tuneful and particularly suited to Miss Laye, who sings the songs with charm.
