ATTEMPT ON RECORD

TARANAKI SWIMMING TIME. t MISS V. CARNCROSS IN 50YDS. . An attempt to break her own Taranaki record of 34 1-5 seconds for the 50 yards event will be made by Miss Viti Camcross, Eltham, at the Fitzroy Surf Club’s . carnival at New Plymouth to-night. Sanction was given by the Taranaki Swimming Centre yesterday. Miss Carncross, who established her record in the race for the Taranaki title at Hawera last season, is senior champion of the Stratford Technical High < School and has not long been out of the intermediate class. Miss Camcross also . holds the 100 yards title and record of lm 19 2-5 s and on Thursday night dead- J heated with. Miss Jean Alleman, Inglewood, for the Taranaki women’s 220 ; yards championship, which was swum in . 3m 6 l-5s compared with, the previous record of 3m 225. Miss Carncross’ performances are attributable to a large extent to the fact that Miss Frances Bult, ■ the Australian / champion, was impressed with her swim- . ming during the tpur made by Misses Bult and Claire Dennis in December* 1933. ' Miss Bult coached the Eltham swimmer at Hawera and the result has been apparent. Miss Camcross and Miss Alleman, who is 16, are the closest to Dominion stand-, ard of any girls Taranaki has so far produced. The Taranaki . 220 yards time compares favourably under the conditions with the time for the final of the • 220 yards at the last New Zealand championships—2m 51 2-ss. The 100 yards time then was lm 9 l-ss. > The rules regarding attempts on records are strict. The competitor has to deposit with the application to the centre the sum of ss, which is forfeited if the attemnt is unsuccessful. The distance in the* baths must be certified by a surveyor and time-has to be kept by three timekeepers on tested watches. The competitor must swim unpaced, or if the attempt is made, as it will be to-night in the course of a race on the programme, the competitor must start from scratch, whether competing against men or women.
