SMALL WOMEN FAVOURED
“T)Q GENTLEMEN prefer small women?” is the latest theme for discussion in Cupid’s realm, Students of both sexes at the University of Michigan debated the opposing merits of big and little women from the point of view of the male. At the end of the debate two judges out of three gave the victory to “small women” as possessing the greater appeal for men.
Students arguing on behalf of big women ransacked ancient and modern history to find examples in their favour. It was asserted— authority unstated—that Cleopatra was “buxom” and that Helen of Troy was no midget.
When one student cited Rubens’s famous picture of Paris giving the beauty prize to Venus as a proof that men prefer large women, the argument seemed conclusive. But supporters of “little women" overwhelmed their opponents with pictures that were ungallant in their portrayal of women with large features-.
