Gold Mining on West Coast.
A resident of the West Coast who is visiting Taranaki remarked that he was surprised at the lack of knowledge in Taranaki of the gold mining activities on the West Coast or their value to New Zealand as a whole. He quoted instances where considerable outside capital had been brought in, mostly from Australia, for developmental purposes. The gold mining revenue was likely to prove very helpful to the Government, which levied 12s 6d on every ounce of gold won. There were now a dozen dredges in operation on the West Coast, and he knew one of them was averaging 300 ounces of gold a week, producing a considerable revenue for the Governmen
