SCHOOL AGRICULTURE

MAHOENUI AND MANG AMIN GI WIN CUTHBERT AND TUSCH SHIELDS. The Mahoenui School undor the direction of Mr. J. C. Moss won the Cuthbert Shield competition for 1934 while the Mangamingi School, Mr. A. J. Simpson, headed the list in the Tisch Shield competition, it was reported at the Taranaki Education Board meeting yesterday. The Cuthbert and Tisch shields are awarded annually by the board to the schools attaining the best standard in agriculture instruction and in the care and development of school environment. The Tisch Shield is for competition amongst sole teacher schools whilst the Cuthbert Shield is competed for byschools of two or more teachers. A school winning one of the shields is placed on the honours list for the three years succeeding the win, after which it may again compete. The award is made on the following (basis:—Arrangement of grounds including shrubberies, flower gardens and general scheme, 50 points; care of grounds including recent improvements, maintenance and finish, 50 points; indoor work including experiments, records, and nature study collections, 50 points; outdoor work, use of garden, forestry and field or other experiments, 50 points; instruction, club work and interested attitude of pupils in science, 50 points. Schools on the honours list at present Cuthbert Shield: Okaiawa, 1931; Ohangai, 1932; Lr. Mangorei, 1933. Tisch Shield: Opua Road, 1931; Tokaora, 1932; Niho Niho, 1933.
