SALVATION ARMY FAREWELL. GOOD WORK AT STRATFORD. Appreciation of the fine work done at Stratford by Captain Pollock and Lieutenant Hawkey while in charge of the Salvation Army Corps was expressed by a large number of people, including representatives of other denominations, at a farewell on Monday evening. Captain Pollock has been transferred to the Training College at Wellington and Lieutenant Hawkey is appointed to Te Kuiti. The new commanders will be (Misses) Adjutant Grice, Petone, and Lieutenant Wyatt, Avondale. Mrs. M. T. Phillips, president of the Stratford branch of the W.C.T.U., was in the chair. Sincere regret at the departure of two splendid officers who had endeared themselves to those amongst whom they worked was expressed by Mrs. Phillips. Women, she said, were splendidly courageous to take such an active part in the spread of the Gospel. The departing officers had done this to the utmost of their ability and in their efforts had not spared themselves but acted as disciples of Christ. The harmony which existed between the denominations was referred to by Rev. T. Skuse (Methodist) who paid tribute to the service rendered the community by Captain Pollock and Lieutenant Hawkey during their brief sojourn in Stratford. He had found it a pleasure to co-operate with them in movements which called for united action and he sincerely regretted their departure. In the absence of Rev. J. Mcgregor, Mr. Wickham spoke on behalf of the Presbyterian Church congregation and expressed appreciation of the fine work done by the young officers. He wished them every success in their new appointments. Mrs. Hopkins, Mr. Pollard and Miss M. J. Fraser also spoke on behalf of various sections of the corps. They were sorry indeed to lose such fine leaders. Under their guidance the corps had progressed remarkably, particularly among the younger members, great advances having been made in the Sunday school. Captain Pollock and Lieutenant Hawkey each thanked the many people of Stratford who had made them welcome and had made their stay at Stratford a happy one. During the evening the following items were given: Vocal duet, “He Hideth My Soul,” Captain Pollock and Lieutenant Hawkey; chorus, “If Jesus Goes With Me I’ll Go,” congregation; vocal solo, “God Will Take Care of you,” Mrs. Blyth; solo, “Keep Your Heart Singing,” Miss M. Pollard; chorus, “There Is a Promise of Sunshine,” Sunday school; vocal solo, “The Angel of His Presence,” Captain Pollock. _ The service opened with the hymn My Home is in Heaven,” and prayer was offered by Mrs. Hopkins. Lieutenant M. Wyatt, who was recently appointed to assist the officers in charge of the Stratford Salvation Army corps, is a daughter of Major and Mrs. Wyatt (retired), formerly officers in charge of the New Plymouth corps.
