ALL-STEEL COACH

ABANDONMENT OF PRINCIPLE. DECISION OF BRITISH RAILWAYS. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. ~ London, Jan. 12. British railway companies have abandoned the principle of the all-steel coach, says the Morning Post. It has been tried and tested on the main systems, and the conclusion has been reached that impact at a high speed involves ■ greater risks to occupants than other methods of construction. The normal result of the collision of all-steel trains is that the coaches were scattered into a star formation owing to their unyielding nature. It is considered that the present method of building is more satisfactory. New stock will be constructed on heavy steel underframes, the bodies being equipped with steel ends and steel panels on a timber framing, with steel roofs. Nevertheless experiments are being made constantly.
