PATEA BEACH SPORTS

DAY COMPLETELY SUCCESSFUL. ANNUAL GALA AT RIVER MOUTH. The annual beach gala organised by the Patea Seaside Improvement Society attracted large crowds to the river mouth yesterday. The programme embraced diving, swimming and canoe races, the latter being a new feature for Patea fixtures. Good entries were received for all events, with the exception of the bathing beauty contest, foi which there were none. Though a trophy was offered and interest in the contest was shown' by girl bathers, was a reluctance to nominate and the item was deleted. The canoe races were contested by four boats, which were capably handled and justified the society’s development of the new feature in regattas. The society’s original intention of having a speed boat programme was prevented by the owners of outboard craft being interested in other fixtures elsewhere on New Year’s Day, for which the programme was drawn up, to be twice postponed because of adverse weather until yesterday. , Mr. T. J. Scott, chairman of tne society, directed the fixture, assisted by members of the committee. Mr. C. J. Gardiner was handicapper and starter. Details of the events are:— 50 yards, women: M. Excellent entries have been received for the Hawera Swimming Club’s interclub carnival to-morrow evening. Final arrangements were made and officials appointed on Friday evening at a committee meeting presided over by Mr. R. M. Rickard. Mr. V. Spragg reported that arrangements were well in hand for the Tara-' naki junior and intermediate championships to be held at Hawera on February 6. It was reported that, in addition to the A team, a B team had been entered for the Dalgleish Cup water polo competition. It was decided to commence the club banner competition on Friday next, and to approach the Hawera Borough Council regarding the making of a moderate charge for admission of the public at club evening.s GENERAL ITEMS. Disappointed Campers. A South Island couple who planned a camping holiday in the North Island decided to make Patea their first camp after visiting friends at Palmerston North. They were disappointed to discover that one of the most essential parts of their equipment, the tent poles, had been left behind at Christchurch. Hawera Resumes Service. The motor-vessel Hawera which has been laid up during the holiday season, resumed running between Wellington and Patea yesterday, the beach swimming sports being suspended for a few minutes while she passed up the river. HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. “SPLENDID FELLOWS” SHOWING. “Splendid Fellows,” the picture which commenced its Hawera season at the Opera House and will screen to-day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.rn., is delightful comedy with aviation thrills added to give it spice. The fun begins when “Monty,” the gay son of a self-made peer, gets entangled with a lady of the stage, and, despite all the servant “Thompson” can do to divert his lordship’s wrath, Monty and Thompson are shipped to Australia by a tramp vessel that tries their seamanship severely. A “flying parson,” whose parish is as big as a State, has been asked to meet Monty on his arrival at Sydney. He tells “Mum and Dad,” typical good-hearted Australian settlers from the Never-Never country, that he is to meet the new chum, and as he will arrive about the time when dad with his wife and daughter are thinking of a holiday, they determine to make it a sort of family gathering. Monty has otherviews, however, for he is not pleased to hear he is to be “shepherded” by a skypilot. Thompson and he go off to see the night life of Sydney and by a happy coincidence meet dad on the same errand. Complications arise that end in dad finding himself obliged to provide bail for being found in a two-up school. The Sydney excitements include a flight over Sydney with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. The Hayseeds go to Melbourne, Monty and Thompson enter for the great race, of which excellent pictures are shown, while the flying parson “carries on.” His duties lead to a crash and a wonderful rescue, and the picture ends with brightness all round. The story is full of laughter, the scenes are perfect, and a better holiday programme would be hard to find.
