NEW COMMISSION

APPOINTEES SUGGESTED. I PROMINENT PUBLIC MEN. Two producers’ representatives whose names have been mentioned in connection with the establishment of the Executive Commission of Agriculture, Mr. David Jones and Mr. G. A. Duncan, states the Waikato Times. Both have been prominent in the public eye during recent years. .Mr. Jones is a well-known figure in the meat industry, while Mr. Duncan is regarded as one of the leading dairy authorities in New Zealand. Mr. David Jones has been chairman of the Meat Producers’ Board since 1932, when he was Minister of Agriculture for a short period. Prior to that he was chairman from the ‘board’s inception. He has been farming successfully in Canterbury almost all his life. He first entered Parliament as a member for Kaiapoi in 1919. He was defeated in 1922 and re-entered the House as member for Ellesmere 1925-28. From 1928 to 1931 he represented Mid-Canter-bury. Mr. Jones was a member of the Parliamentary delegation which attended the Ottawa Conference in 1932 and visited Britain last year negotiating on behalf of the Meat Board with the British Government. He is on a similar mission at present. Mr. G. A. Duncan has in recent years enjoyed an enviable reputation for the soundness of his knowledge of dairying matters. He is a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and has been secretary of the Hawera Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, one of the largest co-operative butter and cheese-manufac-tuying concerns in the Dominion, for. the past 15 years. During this time he has made a specialised study of dairying in all its phases, and his advice and judgment have been requisitioned by the Government and the industry in connection with special committees and commissions appointed to report on questions qf quality, research, marketing and finance. Mr. Duncan came into great prominence in 1933 with the publication’ of his authoritative text book on the New Zealand dairying industry, embracing a comprehensive survey of its formation, administration, accounts, finance, costing and statistics. He was. engaged for several months last year on the Dairy Commission .
