PRINCE GOVERNOR

CHANCES OF AUSTRALIA DUKE OF KENT POSSIBLE PROSPECTS FAVOURABLE NO PRECEDENT IN PAST

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright London, Jan. 3. The report that Mr. J. A. Lyons, Federal Prime Minister, is asking His Majesty to appoint the Duke of Kent Gover-nor-General of Australia, is regarded in responsible quarters as standing a better chance of fulfilment than any previous movement to secure Royalty as Governor-Generals, states the Australian Press Association. , Though there is no precedent for the King’s son acting vice-regally in the Dominions, it is considered that the atmosphere for such an appointment is now more favourable in view of the Duke of Gloucester’s successful tour. The Sun-Herald Service says that although finality is unlikely pending Mr. Lyons’ visit to London, there seems to be excellent prospects of the Duke of Kent being Australia’s next GovernorGeneral. The Duke of Kent’s marriage has enhanced the possibility of such a mission because it is felt that the position essentially requires a married son.

DIPLOMATIC FEELERS AUSTRALIAN INQUIRIES STATEMENT IMPOSSIBLE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.15 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 4. / The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, declined to comment upon the report that a request had been made for the appointment of the Duke of Kent as the next Australian Governor-General. Inquiries in official circles elicited the information that diplomatic feelers had been extended from Australia on the subject, but that special circumstances rendered it impossible to expect any official statement on behalf of the Commonwealth. Sir Isaac Isaacs, the present GovernorGeneral, who is now 80 years of age, will retire this year. He does not desire an extension of his term of office.
