STRUGGLE WITH ALLEGED THIEF. POLICE SURROUND EMPTY HOUSE. Five minutes after a telephone call had been received at the police station a few days ago a cordon of police surrounded a house at Ashfield, Sydney. Three policemen entered the house, an’d • commenced a systematic search. They found that the occupants were absent, but, after a few minutes, there was a hubbub at a back window, and they discovered a young and well-dressed man struggling in the grip of a constable, who had been posted at the back of the housei As soon as the reinforcements arrived the man ceased struggling, and is alleged to have said: “Oh, well, I suppose this means two or three years.” The police took possession of jewellery and clothing, valued at £2O, and also of a steel jemmy. They found that every room in the house had been ransacked, and that the contents of drawers, wardrobes and cupboards had been scattered in wild confusion.
