HOLIDAY VISITORS

POPULARITY OF DAWSON FALLS. MANY HUNDREDS ON MOUNTAIN. The hot weather last week was extra inducement to visit the mountain and many hundreds of visitors made the trip to Dawson Falls. On New Year’s Eve, when the weather was ideal for picnickers, the grassy lawns near the hostel were crowded with holidaymakers. The : hostel has been very popular and there are many campers. A party from Auckland is staying in the top -cottage arid many other parties have reserved accommodation in both the hostel and camp houses during January. On Monday night there were several musical items in the lounge. Mrs. Murphy sang, while Mr. Smith, Christchurch, played the piano. After supper dancing was enjoyed to music played by Mr. Smith. On Sunday night. some of the guests played badminton in the dance. hall while others conducted a shooting cornpetition which was won by Dr. Wells. Several parties were already well on their way up the mountain on Tuesday morning when they were overtaken by rough weather and a high wind arid were forced to desist. Despite fairly heavy rain from the north on New Year’s Day many cars visited the house and guests walked down to see the Dawson Falls in flood.

One of the guests during the New Year was a member of the party which last year welcomed New Year with flares on the top of Ruapehu. This is nearly 1000 ft. higher than Egmont. This band of enthusiasts was the highest,in the Dominion to welcome 1934 and not the party on the summit of Mt. Egmont.

Visitors in the hostel for the last few days have included:—Mr. and Mrs. J. Williams and Miss Williams (Wanganui); Misses Brerman (Wellington); Miss A. J. Stonehouse (Palmerston North); Mr. and Mrs. N. Hayley (Trentham); Mr. G. Hayley (Wellington); Mr. W. D. Watson (Lower Hutt); Mr. L. Saggas (Trentham);'Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Spillman and Misses J. and E. Spillman (Palmerston North); Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Smith (Wanganui); Mrs. Bray (Wellington)); Miss D. E. Bray and Miss Loma Bray (Wellington); Mr. J. Knight (Akatawara); Mr. F. F. Beading (Wellington); Mr. H. and Miss Ina Dempsey (New Plymouth); Mr. J. H. and Miss. Smith (Christchurch); Dr. and Mrs. Wells (Carterton); Miss Davenport (Masterton); Mr. K. McKenzie (Invercargill); Messrs. D. Lee arid Dingle (Hawera).
