BEER CONSUMPTION

6,000,000 GALLONS INCREASE. FIGURES FOR AUSTRALIA. Customs figures supplied by the New South Wale? Licensed Victuallers’ Association recently show that there was an increase of over six million gallons in the consumption of beer in Australia during the ten months of this year, compared with the corresponding period of 1933. For the eleven months ended November the increase in New South Wales was 2,455,157 gallons. In November the increase amounted to 495,777 gallons. It was stated that the remarkable increase was due to the increased employment and spending power of the people corresponding with the reduction of Id in the price of bottle beer and the added quantity of an ounce in the size of glasses following the reduction by the Federal Government of 3d a gallon in excise duty in October, 1932 . The added revenue received by the Federal Government from the increased sales since the eduction in excise duty, it was stated, proved the argument constantly voiced by trade interests, that the heavy excise tax was defeating its own ends. The increase in consumption throughout Australia during October was 1,161,839 gallops. The excise revenue amounted to £441,896,. compared with £396,959 for the same month last year, an increase of £44,939. Figures for the whole Commonwealth from January to October were 43,332,308 gallons, compared with 37,326,522 for the same jjgp.od » 1133.
