NEW YEAR 'BEACON

FLARES ON EGMONT’S SUMMIT. CLIMBERS’ SPECTACULAR PLAN. ‘ Members of the Taranaki Alpine Club plan again this year to celebrate the advent of the New Year by lighting “the world’s highest beacon”—building a bonfire and firing flares from the sumrpit of Mount Egmont at midnight on Monday. Provided the weather is moderately fine the spectacular effect should be considerable. Thera will be no moon, to lessen the brilliance of the oil flares, rockets and Verey lights the alpinists plan to use. ■ • The personnel of the party is not yet . definite, but it will be led probably by Mr. Roy Sole, guide at the North C mont house, and will comprise - seven climbers. A start will be made from the hostel about 7.30 o'clock, so that the summit should be reached in ample time to prepare the display. A similar venture last year was spectacular, the lights' being visible for many miles, particularly to the north-east
