WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Tawhiti: About 60 children, together with their relatives and friends, spent a happy time on a recent evening when the second annual Christmas tree, arranged by members of the Tawhiti Women’s Institute, was held. Games and items by the children filled the time until Father Christmas arrived about 9.30 p.m. Each child received a present, together with a fancy packet of sweets. Ice creams were served to the children and after a few more items the children’s supper was served. The committee in charge of the supper arrangements was Mesdames Adams, A. Appleyard and Johnston, while the programme was arranged by Mrs. G. Hall and Miss Jean Easton. 'A piano and violin duet was given by Miss Noreen and Master Bob Goodyer, Highland fling by Miss Jean Paterson, elocutionary items by Miss Joyce Pepperell and a violin duet by Mi** Daphne Waldron and Master Bob Goodyer. The accompaniments were played by Miss May Rallantyne. • Before supper Miss J. Easton, on behalf of the institute members, presented bouquets to Mrs. Tidswell (president), Miss Ballantyne (secretary), Mrs. Appleyard (treasurer) and Mrs. Adams for her work in connection with the Christmas tree arrangements. Mrs. Tidswell was presented with a “sweets” bouquet on behalf of Mesdames Valentine and Muir. Gifts were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Tidswell from the tree and a bouquet to Mrs. s. Larcom, president of the Whareroa Institute. Competitions drawn during the evening resulted in Mrs. W. V. Parker (Ararata) winning the crochet supper cloth made and given by Mrs. Appleyard senr. and Miss Jean Easton the cake, basket made and given by Mrs. W. Adams. After supper a few dances were held, music being played by Miss Ballantyne and Mrs. Tidswell.
