NEW PLYMOUTH QUOTATIONS. TOMATOES IN SHORT SUPPLY. The slight advance remarked last week in prices for fresh foodstuffs has been maintained during the week. Tomatoes are still unusually dear for the time of the year, but a reported drop on city quotations will probably have effect within a few days. Of the vegetables, peas and beans are still difficult to obtain, but other supplies are normal. Local onions are now coming on to the market. Quotations are:— Fruit: Apples, Stunners, 4d per lb; new season’s Canadian Winesap, six for Is; cookers, 4d per lb; plums, 4d and 6d per lb; cherries, Is 6d per lb; oranges, South Australian Valencias, 5 and 6 for Is; Jamaica, 4 and 5 for Is; lemons, Tauranga, 10 for Is; bananas, 21b. for Is; tomatoes, lOd per lb; strawberries, Is 6d per chip; peaches, 4d and 6d per lb. Vegetables: New potatoes, 81b. for Is; local, 61b. for Is; onions, 71b. for Is; cabbages, 2d, 3d and 4d each; green peas, 5d per lb; beans, 6d per lb; rhubarb, 5d a bundle; marrows, 9d; cucumbers, 3d and 4d; root vegetables, 3d a bundle. Beef: Sirloin, 7d per lb; beef steak, 6d; corned beef, 6d. and 7d per lb; prime ribs, 6d and 7d per lb; rump steak, 9d per lb; sausages, 4d per lb; tripe, 6d per lb. Mutton: Legs, 7d and 8d per lb; forequarters, 5d per lb; hind quarters, 6d and 7d per lb; chops, 6d and Bd.
Lamb: lOd to Is. Miscellaneous: Pork, 8d and ,9d per lb; veal, 6d and 8d per lb. Butter: Factory, first grade, lOd per lb; whey, 8d per lb; dairy, 7d per lb. Cheese: Ordinary,' 7d per lb; matured, lOd per lb. Bacon: Rashers, from Is to Is 2d; by piece, from 9d lb. Ham: Whole, Is per lb; cooked, pressed, 2s per lb; shoulders, lOd per lb. BRITISH EXCHEQUER RETURNS. British Official Wireless. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Dec. 27. Exchequer returns for the past week show that during the current financial year the total ordinary revenue, exclusive of self-balancing revenue, amounted at December 22 to £404,064,177, which is £8,047,253 less than the amount collected at the corresponding date last year. Expenditure for the same period, exclusive of self-balancing items, was £512985,085, which exceeds the amount expended at the corresponding date last year by £11,788,868.
