SCHOOL CHRISTMAS TREE PARTY. PICNIC FOR SCHOOL BREAK-UP. The Christmas tree party held at Harleyville recently was a success. The firsf; part of the evening was spent in items rfiven by the school children under Miss Elmslie as follows: Carols, school; recitation, Thelma Smith; song, infants; recitation, Dannie Hurley; song, solo parts by Moira Hurley, Vivienne Adlam, Joan Thame, Tony Dunbar, Trevor Scown and Tony Adlam and chorus by school; recitation, Ivan Dunbar; song, infants; song, school. • After the final item, Santa Claus appeared and the children were all given a present from the loaded tree. Hats were also handed round and ice cream dispensed by members of the women s committee. Supper was served and the remainder of the evening was passed m dancing to music played by Mrs. Doug A bouquet was presented to Miss Elmslie by Vivienne Adlam on behalf of the committee in appreciation of her v.wk in training the children. Mr. Dan thanked the committee for the time and trouble it had taken to organise the entertainment. The committee consjsted or Mesdames Adlam, Douglas, Dick hurley. Couchman, Jack Hurley, E. Mr. and Mrs. Stone are spending the holidays at Auckland. Miss Elmslie is holidaying in the South Island. Mr. and Mrs. H. D. McCarthy are spending the Christmas holidays at Auroa. Mr. Dentist, Wellington, is the guest of Mr. Craft. Mrs. H. Ball, Ida Valley, Otago, with her two sons, is staying with Mr. and Mrs. S. Smitheram. PATERSON CUP LOST. AUROA DISTRICT NEWS. The Patterson Cup for factory, cricket teams, recently won by the Oeo-Otakeho team, was lost to Skeet Road. Mr. and Mrs. Sommerfield, Wellington, v;ere the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Stone for Christmas. . Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Gibson and Miss Gibson were visitors to Oeo for ChristVisitors to New Plymouth during the week included. A fire, used to destroj- cleared patches of lupin on the Turi Summer Golf Club’s course ; at Patea got out of control and burned a large area of standing lupin, sending dense clouds of smoke across the town. The abattoir buildings of the Patea Butchery Company were endangered and only hard work by the staff prevented damage. Stock was released by the cutting of the fence wires. Okaiawa Music Afternoon. Miss V. Mortimer recently entertained her music pupils and their parents, at her home, Division Road, Okaiawa. Pianoforte solos were given by Misses Ruth Blair, Mary Lindsay, Maida Green, Merle Rae, Joan Ramsay, Sylvia Thrush and Ross Barclay and Robbie Shearer. Duets were played by Maida Green and Merle Rae, Merle Rae and Robbie Shearer and Ross Barclay and Miss V. Mortimer. Miss Mortimer played the “Fantasia” Sonata (Op. 27 No. 1) by Beethoven and “Cradle Song” (Wiegenlied) by Percy Grainger. Miss Margaret Barclay also played a pianoforte solo. Merle Rae presented Miss Mortimer with a bouquet. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess after which the children adjourned to the garden for games. A cake competition was won by Mrs. W. Blair. Kaupokonui Beach Popular. During the Christmas holidays large numbers of people have visited the Kaupokonui beach. Ideal weather has prevailed for swimming and camping. Several tents have been pitched and many tourists have called to spend the night before passing on. Tennis Tournament. ■ St. Patrick’s Tennis Club on Friday evening decided to hold a tennis tournament on January 1 and 2. Messrs. L. Hughes and J. Christie and Misses E. Sutton and I. Mourie were appointed a tournament committee. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. A New Year’s Eve ball will be held by the Otakeho combined hockey clubs in the Otakeho hall on Monday night. TO COMMENCE AT HAWERA. Commencing to-day at the matinee, Roy Rene will make his appearance at the Hawera Opera House in “Strike Me Lucky,” a musical comedy produced in Australia by Cinesound Films Ltd. The programme will be shown twice to-day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and will continue on Monday for three sessions, 2 p.m., 8 pm. and 10 p.m. Roy Rene is a well-known Australian comedian and some years ago was on the Fuller circuit in that country and in New Zealand. He is ably supported m “Strike Me Lucky” by Dan Agar, Yvonne Barnard and many other Australian stage and screen favourites. Included in the comedy is a ballet of beautiful girls, the pick of the Australian film world, The theme of the story is comedy with music aiid it is one of the best films made in recent months by Cinesound. Special attention is drawn to the midnight matinee of the film on Monday, which will enable late shoppers to witness what is one of the outstanding pictures of the month. With dancing, singing and humour, Rey Rene and his co-artfsts give 1934 a rousing send-off,-
