PERSONAL
The death has occurred of Mrs. Maria Maude Cockayne, widow of the late Dr. Leonard Cockayne, C.M.G., the distinguished New Zealand botanist. Captain P. W. Clemens, who represented the colony of Sierra Leone at the Victoria centenary, was a guest at the White Hart Hotel, New Plymouth, last night. He will leave this morning for Wellington, where he will re-join the Oronsay.
Archbishop Kelly’s condition has further improved, states a Sydney cable, but the bronchial affection which caused his serious collapse a few days ago has left his heart in a weakened condition. He has received many goodwill messages from New Zealand and other parts of the Empire.
Members of the Southland Education Board office staff met last week to farewell the senior inspector (Mr. C. N. Haslam), who has been appointed senior inspector in Taranaki. Mr. H. Thompson, secretary to the board, asked Mr. Haslam to accept a gift as a token of appreciation from the staff. They had always worked in harmony and the senior inspector had been ever ready to lend a helping hand to lighten the labour of office routine. Mr. S. Rise (chairman of the board) and Messrs. R. Hunter and G. Palmer (inspectors) supported Mr. Thompson.
