NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK

YESTERDAY MORNING’S WORK. LITTLE GALLOPING DONE. There was very little fast work on the New Plymouth track yesterday morning, practically all the horses being restricted to pace work. Lalla Quex and Davistock were the only ones to gallop. R. Barlow was the only trainer .to work before breakfast, but Amyril, Glenvane, Tahurangi and Merry Way were all restricted to half-pace tasks. This quartette are all in good order for the holiday racing. H. Dulieu exercised all his team on the beach. After the breakfast interval Ngapapa was the first arrival and she was given strong pace work. General- Quex, Spender • and Golden Rill did a round of half-pace work. The first two kept together all the way but the two year old was anxious to go faster and finished some lengths in front. Lalla Quex and Davistock shaped pleasingly over seven furlongs in Im. 3215., the last five taking Im. 5 4-ss. There is no doubt that Lalla Quex thrives on plenty of work. BOnny Glow and Inky Pinky were sent

lillltllllllllllllllltnillillilHllllHllHlllliltlllilllttllllltllilllltlll once round at a steady half pace and were then given barrier exercise. Both shaped well. Courtega and Aussie Ra cantered once round and then covered a circuit at an easy half pace. Mounts at Ellerslie. Additional riding engagements announced for the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting include: E. Manson: Baroscope. R. W. McTavish: Sinking Fund. H. Goldfinch: Gay Marigold, Final Shot, Imamint, Big Dook, Penelope, Tidalia. C. Thomson: Callamart. E. Ludlow: Respectful. F. Foster: Cotsfield. T. Green: Hunting Bag. E. Manson will ride Baroscope overweight in the Auckland Cup, but expects to do about 7.5. Related to Aussie Ra. Ethics, the winner of the King Emperor Cup at Calcutta last Saturday, is closely related to Aussie Ra, who is trained at New Plymouth by R. Johnson for the Tikorangi sportsman Mr. F. Sarten. Ethics is by Rossendale from Cragrose, a full sister to Carine, the darm of Aussie Ra. Ethics was one of the unluckiest horses in India last season, filling minor places in many of the most valuable races of the term. Prior to his

sale to India as a four-year-old he won’ several races in Australia, including the Rosehill Nursery, Corinthian Stakes, Rydalmere Handicap and A.J.C. April Handicap. As stated in the cable, he is the first Australian horse to have won the big Calcutta mile. Ethics is more than Australian in breeding, however, for he descends from a. notable New Zealand family. His dam, Cragrose, is by Malster from the Hotchkiss mare Field Rose, a daughter of Rose of Wellington. Field Rose was bred in New Zealand, being a sister to True Blue, winner of the A.J.C. Wayerley Handicap and Randwick Stakes, and second in both the Metropolitan and Doncaster, and she was sold to go to Australia in 1309. Last year, shortly after his arrival in India, Ethics was beaten only a short head by the champion French horse Sans Arne in the Kling-Emperor Cup, with Tel-Asur, who finished second last Saturday, only another head away. The unplaced division 12 months ago included Compris and Pongatchev, who finished third in the race on Saturday. TelAsur won the event two years ago. Wanganui’s Change of Dates. The Wanganui Jockey Club has made arrangements to race on January 31 and February 2, 1935. This is a fortnight earlier than usual, following four days after the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, the last day of which will be January 26. This alteration will mean that nominations close on Friday, January 11, at 2 p.m., and to overcome the difficulty occasioned by re-handicaps after the Wellington meeting, weights will be published on Friday, January 25, the day preceding the close of the Wellington meeting. The short period between the declaration of weights and the day for taking acceptances may not allow sufficient time for a list of the weights to reach all those interested, but they will be published in all the leading newspapers on Friday, January 25, and the acceptances for the first day’s events will close on Monday, January 28, at 8 p.m. A pumping plant has been brought into commission and the course proper has been watered regularly, which will ensure a good track for January.
