MEREMERE SCHOOL YEAR
PICNIC AND PRIZE-GIVING. There was a record crowd at the Meremere annual school picnic and prizegiving. After a lunch served by -the women of the district races were organised, results being:— Tiny tots, girls, Shirley Bloor 1, Doris Judd 2, Valerie Fyson 3; boys, Ernie Davison 1, Leslie Bloor 2, Lennie Lacey 3; girls under 7, Betty Williams 1, Catherine Dunlop 2, Aileen Bloor 3; boys, Bryce Williams 1, Toby Judd 2, Dennis Mead 3; girls 9 and under, Shirley Galyer 1, Edna Davison 2, Valerie Bloor 3; boys, Raymond Wallace 1, Johnnie Davison 2, John Mead 3; girls 11 and under, Beryl Judd 1, Daphne Spice 2, Merle Bloor 3; boys, Alex Wallace 1, Billy Williams 2; girls 13 and under, Beverley Foreman 1, Mary McNaught 2, Isabel McNaught 3; boys, Dick Galyer 1, Jimmy Davison 2, Mervyn Galyer 3; girls consolation race, Jean Williams 1, Audrey Williams 2; boys’ consolation, Angus Dunlop 1, Allan Galyer 2, Allan Mead 3; young ladies’ race, Miss G. Williams 1, Miss R. Wallace 2, Miss M. Wallace 3; three-legged race, Isabel McNaught and Beverley Foreman 1, Phyllis Haycock and Beryl Judd 2; boys, Dick Galyer and Mervyn Galyer 1, Henry Davison and Jimmy Davison 2; married ladies’ race, Mrs. Foreman 1, Mrs. G. Williams 2, Mrs. Bloor and Mrs. Gardner dead heat 3; young men’s race, M. Murray 1, W. Dunlop 2, E. Davison 3;- boys’ high jump under 10 years, Barry Foreman 1, over ten, Allan Mead and Dick Galyer dead heat 1, young men’s high jump, J. Galyer 1, W. Dunlop 2. At the conclusion of the races the prizes were presented by Mr. G. Williams as follow: Primer 1, Ernie Davison, Catherine Dunlop, Barbara Mead, Derek Livingston; prime 2, Dennis Mead, Allan Davison, Ivan Galyer, Margaret -Spice, Margaret McNaught; primer 3, Cyril Judd, Johnnie Davison, Harvey Foreman, Bryce Williams; primer 4, John Mead, Albert Spice, Daphne Spice, Betty Williams; standard 1, Barry Foreman, Angus Dunlop, Gladys Davison, Ronnie Spice, Aileen Bloor, Betty Lacey; standard 2, Ruby Davison, Hazel Shrimpton, Edna Davison, Beryl Judd, Frank Davison, Raymond Wallace, Shirley Galyer; standard 3, Allan Galyer, Billy Gardner, Billy Williams, Jimmy Davison, Ray Judd, Valerie Bloor; standard 4, Allan Mead, Mervyn Galyer, Merle Bloor; form 1, Jean Williams, Audrey Williams, Henry Davison, Alex Wallace; form ’ 2, Jean Geary, Isabel McNaught, Noel Foreman, Dick Galyer; form 3, Beverley Foreman; attendance specials, for those not missing a half day, Raymond Wallace, Billy Gardner, Henry Davison, Alex Wallace, Beverley Foreman, Isabel McNaught. An arithmetic special prize presented by Mr. G. W. Williams was won by Angus Dunlop. Sewing special prizes presented by Miss Webb were won as follow:— Primers, Betty Williams; standards 1 and 2, Betty Lacey; standard 3 and 4, Merle Bloor; forms 1 and 2, Jean Geary. Nature studj-- specials presented by Mr. D. T. Gardner were won by Merle Bloor and Beverley Foreman. Attendance certificates were won by Raymond Wallace, Betty Williams, Harvey Foreman, Barry Foreman, Alex Wallace, Billy Gardner, Isabel McNaught, Beverley Foreman, Billy Williams. For the group judging of the carrot crops Jean Williams was first, Betty Williams second and Audrey Williams 3; for mangolds Alex Wallace was first. Mr. G. Williams thanked the people for their support, the women for providing lunch and afternoon tea and Mr. G. Wallace for the use of his paddock. He
also wished Mr. Gardner a speedy recovery, as owing to ill-health he was unable to attend the picnic. Miss Webb spoke to the children on behalf of the teachers. Mr. Jtidd, senr., recounted some of his experiences in the early days.
