PUKENGAHU CONCERT

END OF SCHOOL YEAR MARKED. SPLENDID PROGRAMME GIVEN. There was a fairly large attendance at the Pukengahu hall on Thursday night, when the school concert and prizegiving were held. The hall was unusually decorated with flowers. The children’s acting and singing reflected great credit upon their teacher, Miss Richards, who had trained the children for the concert in a short time. The programme, which was announced by Mr. D. McGuinness, chairman of the school committee, was as follows: Song, Joyce Best, with chorus sung by the elder scholars; military dance, Norma Schwieters and Margaret Dick; song, Thelma Harris and Joyce Moore; sketch, “Riches”; Mrs. Moon (Margaret Dick), Mr. Lily (Doris Haseltine), Edie (Joyce Moore), Gene (Jean McKinley); Highland fling, Jessie Dick; sketch, “The School;” teacher, Norma Harper; monitor, Ron Bremer; Brown, Colin McKinley, and several other pupils; song, standards 3-6; sketch, “Forget-me-nots,” Thelma Harris, Jessie Dick, lan Best, Rex McKinley, Joyce Best; Scottish song, Joyce Dick; Highland dance, Joyce Dick; oneact play, “Bill Sykes”; Bill Sykes, Ron Bremer; scouts, Colin McKinley (chief), Jack Best, Thelma Harris; haka. The accompanists were Misses Norma Harper and E. Coleman. As soon as the concert programme was concluded each scholar received a book prize. A special prize was given for the child who had made the greatest progress. This was won by Mavis Booker. Good attendance certificates were presented to Margaret Dick (five years without missing a day), Jack Best, Jean McKinley and Colin McKinley. After presenting the prizes and certificates Mr. D. McGuinness made a short speech congratulating Miss Richards on the high standard of the children’s acting, and upon the fact that all the children who sat for the examination did so well. Father Christmas then arrived and distributed toys and sweets from the Christmas tree among the smaller children. After supper dancing for the grownups was enjoyed, music being played by Misses Coleman, Stevens and Stockman. Mr. J. O’Neill was rrtester of ceremonies. A competition for a fat lamb was won by Mr. D. Wickham, Huiroa. The proceeds were in aid of the Pukengahu Cricket Club. Personal. Miss Doris O’Neill has returned from a visit to the South Island.
