TWO COLLISIONS

CAR OVERTURNED AT HAWERA. <» MOTOR-CYCLISTS LEG BROKEN. A car collision which might have had more serious consequences to the occupants of the vehicles occurred about 10 p.m. on Saturday on the intersection of Princes Street and South Road, Hawera. Mrs. E. Meuli, Whareroa, was travelling along South Road and Mr. Dolan, Hawera, was approaching from Princes Street extension when the accident took pIaCG» Mr. Dolan’s car was overturned and badly damaged, the driver, however, escaping lightly. Neither Mrs. Meuli nor her passenger was hurt. A broken left leg was suffered by a young man, Mr. P. Paterson, as the result of a collision on Saturday night on the Tokaora hill between the motorcycle he was. riding from . Manaia to Hawera, and a car driven by Mr. R. Wallis. Mr. Paterson was admitted to the Hawera hospital, where he is progressing favourably. EX-PATEA MAYOR HONOURED. - BRIGADE’S AND BAND’S TRIBUTE. Mr. P. S. Finlayson, Mayor of Patea from 1923 to 1929, was the guest of the Patea Municipal Band and Patea Volunteer Fire Brigade at a valedictory social last week. The captain of the brigade, Mr. F. Fitzwater, who presided, expressed the fire brigade’s regret at Mr. Finlayson’s departure from the town, for it was indebted to him for repeated kindnesses as Mayor. On behalf of the.firemen he presented to Mr. Finlayson a fountain pen. A former captain, Mr. F. Spooner, endorsed the captain’s remarks. The Mayor, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, president of the band, presented Mr. Finlayson with a clock as a symbol of the fellowship that had always existed between the band aiid himself. But for Mr. Finlayson’s perseverance with the beginners Patea would not have had a band to-day. Conductor Maglath, Sergeant A. A. Carey and Bandsmen R. M. Willis, F. Stanford, R. Willis, junr., and P. O’Grady endorsed the remarks of the Mayor. Mr. Finlayson in reply thanked both organisations for the gifts. He had been pleased to do anything for either group on all occasions, he said. Items were contributed by Messrs. J. Wells, R. M. Willis, F. Ramsbottom, D. ■Adams and D. Reid. LABOURER BANKRUPT. ILL-HEALTH THE TROUBLE. A deficiency’of £321 17s 9d was shown by George Harris, Patea; labourer, bankrupt, when examined by Mr. C. O. Pratt, Official Assignee, at Hawera yesterday. His total debts amounted to £771 7s 9d and total assets to £450. No offer could be made by Harris, and after a brief examination the meeting was adjourned sine die. Tn a statement, Harris said he was married with three children, and had been employed as night watchman at the Patea grading works for the past 17 years. He had in 1930 obtained an advance of £5OO from the Repatriation Department for the building of a house. To build the house, he had to borrow £lOO from Mr. R. Hunger. Family illnesses had caused trouble and he had got into further debt. His present earnings were £2 17s weekly. The debts were nearly, all incurred two years ago and since then he had paid cash as far as possible. Clapham. “O te Pakeha.” During the past few days of hot weather the water consumption at Patea has reached an average of 81 gallons a head, and the use of garden hoses has caused official concern. The noise of spraying water drew a borough official to the rear of a dwelling recently where he was surprised to discover a Maori woman hosing herself down clad in a single brief garment. There was consternation and embarrassed retreat on both sides accompanied by the woman’s shriek of “O te pakeha.” Satisfied that no infringement of the by-laws was taking place, the inspector went on his way with tiie laughter of the household echoing behind him. Motorists’ Errors at Patea. Despite the clear marking of the main highway south through Patea there is a surprising number of motorists who fail to make' the turn at Bedford Street and continue along the beach road. The state of this road is usually sufficient warning that they have left the main highway, but one motorist yesterday was within a few hundred yards of the water’s edge before he realised his error and sought directions. Distribution of Rations. Assistance was given to 43 families in the Hawera and Normanby districts on Saturday by the distribution of rations to registered unemployed as follows: Tea, 221 b; sugar, 1961 b; flour, 2561 b; oatmeal, 441 b; rice, 441 b; cheese, 311 b; butter, 451 b; bread, 87 loaves. Methodist Anniversary. The anniversary services of the Hawera Methodist Sunday school were held yesterday. Appropriate addresses were given by the Revs. John Ings and B. Metson, and solos, duets, choruses and Scripture recitations were given by the children at all’service'
