SALE AS SCRAP IRON

OPUNAKE HARBOUR MACHINERY. MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Opunake Harbour Board was held on Friday night. Members present were Messrs. S. J. Hickey (chairman), W. A. Sheat, R. Watson, D. Mourie, G. Looney and the clerk, Mr. C. N. Thayer. To give inquirers reliable information the board authorised the Government inspector to specially report on the machinery, it was stated.- The report in effect was that the cost of repair work did not warrant the expenditure. The big cranes were about 45 years old. The board decided to treat the major portion of the machinery as scrap iron and the chairman, the clerk and Mr. Mourie were appointed a committee to dispose of it. The clerk (Mr. Thayer) reported on the financial position. The rates and arrears were coming in fairly well. In regard to recovering arrears of the native rates the board was fairly successful. It was reported that children had “found” the air valves in the board’s water pipe line and were cutting short the supply to customers. Arrangements were authorised to stop the supply of water for juvenile pranks. The last span of the mole was now demolished, it was reported.
