SCHOOL PLAYS DRAW
BAD POSITION RETRIEVED LARKIN AND WATERS’ STAND. OLD BOYS JUST MISSES WIN. Losing the ninth wicket in the last over before the drawing of stumps, New Plymouth High School’s last two men played out time to force a deserved draw with New Plymouth Old Boys at the School ground. on Saturday. Old Boys had made 262 the previous week and one School wicket had fallen for 10 tuns. . School, however, found fairly early in the afternoon that five wickets were down for 54 and it was then that T. Larkin and N. Waters produced another of their invaluable partnerships to add 107 runs. Larkin carried on with Johns for 52 more arid when he was run out there was 10 minutes for play with three wickets to fall. Two Of the tail-enders went and Whittington faced the bowling with three balls to go. The batsmen ran a bye and Johns remained unbeaten after holding the fort over the final crucial stages. F. Ulenberg and Simpson fell to Christensen and Eggleton respectively fairly early, but Donnelly and Waters put on 32 before Harris beat Donnelly with a really good ball. Donnelly till then had been showirig his best form. Broughton survived only two balls before going lbw and School was in a critical position. Waters was batting as soundly .as ever, however, and with Larkin carried the score to 92 at the tea adjournment. Runs came slowly against a well-placed field although the bowling was not brilliant; After tea the pace quickened and , the pair played great cricket. The partnership reached its 100—-the fourth such effort the pair had made together—and then Waters .was., run out by Eggleton from a well-judged return by Richardson to the bowler 1 * end. Waters did not give a chance. -■ Johns'arid Larkin took the'score along from 161 to 213 before Larkin was run out by Birch in a touch-and-go decision. He had been as safe as Waters and with him had saved School from a possible debacle. Lash had been bowling loose and lofty balls in an effort to upset, the batsmen and claimed Ulenberg’s wicket. Harris bowled .Urry from the other end and Whittington faced the crucial final half of the last over. The first ball was off the wicket, the next produced One bye and Johns played out the oVer. The Old Boys’ bowling was not strong, particularly Lash’s, but the field was well placed and missed ■no chances. Birch had little opportunity, but he was snappy when Larkin was dismissed.
