BANKS ON HOLIDAY

SPORTS DAY AT STRATFORD. GOLF, BOWLING AND TENNIS. Developed from a suggestion thrown out at a re-union of Taranaki bank staffs at New Plymouth in the winter, a sports day was held at Stratford yesterday, which was a bank holiday. -The original intention was to have a north v. south cricket match, but as that plan did not cater for those whose favourite sport is not cricket, it was decided that bowls, tennis and golf should be played instead. So successful was the initial effect that the scheme will probably be enlarged and made an annual fixture on one of the bank holidays, with the inclusion of other forms of sport. Teams were picked on a north and south basis, Stratford being included in the south. The Stratford tennis, golf and bowling clubs placed their facilities at the disposal of the visiting and Stratford players. Bowlers from Eltham, Kaponga and Stratford played as a south team and those from New Plymouth, Waitara and Inglewood in the north team. In some cases the teams were filled up with Stratford or Avon club players. Results are:--(Morning.)

Among the golfers, noi*th won by two games to one, three being all square. Morning and afternoon scores respectively, with north names mentioned first in each case, are:— H. Roberts and A. Holly beat L. Sole and J. O. Osborne 4 up and all square. B. Twomey and G. Clark v, T. D. O’Leary and T. McGuire all square and won 1 up. F. J. Johnson and A. Wilson v. D. S. Morris and R. C. Strachan all square and lost 1 down. Teams were picked on a north v. south basis for the morning when north won decisively, but in the afternoon the teams were split up and individual games played. Teams representing Stratford and New Plymouth swam in a relay race at the ■ conclusion of the other sports and Stratford won by half a length over 50-yard : laps.
