Sometimes the knock due to a loose connecting-rod bearing is very difficult to locate. It is generally found, with engines having a pressure-fed lubricating system, that the knock is absent when the engine idles, but is apparent from 40 to 50 miles an hour. This is because the oil acting under pressure, cushions the blow at low speeds. Therefore, when seeking for the elusive knock, reduce the oil pressure, and it will be an easy matter to locate the loose bearing.
