ART UNIONS AND SWEEPSTAKES.

Concern at the prevalence of variou« forms of gambling, including art unions, sweepstakes and lotteries, was expressed at the annual Auckland Methodist Synod. It was decided to recommend that positive teaching on the • ethical perils of gambling and art unions b® given on an annual Sunday from the pulpits. _ Concern at the rapid spread of the gambling menace was expressed in one of several resolutions, and members of the church were urged not to participate in art unions, sweepstakes and lotteries. It was also recommended that representations be made to the Government to resist- the attempts of racing inerests to secure double totalisator facilities, the legalising of telegraphic betting and the publication of dividends.
