PASTURE AWARDS

SPRING JUDGING ENDS F. GOODIN, OKATO, LEADS. COMMENT MADE BY JUDGE. Mr. F. Goodin, Okato, is leading by lj points in the spring judging of the pasture competition organised by. the Farmers’ Field Competition Committee, according to the report which was submitted yesterday by the chairman and judge, Mr. J. M. Smith, at a meeting of th committee yesterday. There were present Messrs. Smith (chairman), A. Turnbull, H. C. Sampson, S. Topless, H. C. Sorenson and D. le Cren Morgan (hon. secretary). The report stated that the spring judging had been completed. The weather this spring held pasture growth back somewhat, with the result that the same standard as that reached in. previous years was not reached. f[n judging, however, the points, were stiffened so that the general lower standard of points allotted did not mean that the pastures were poorer to that extent. There had been a marked improvement in pastures generally throughout Taranaki during the past several years, and that had resulted in the old standard of points bringing the best pastures too near to the possible points, thus not leaving sufficient margin to work on. It was unfortunate that a break in the judging occurred, but that was unavoidable. The delay meant that the last two or three districts to be judged suffered from the dry spell experienced, and as a result the pastures in some instances had browned and had run to seed rapidly, and suffered in the judging accordingly. The pastures generally indicated care and attention on the part of the competitors, and the interest shown in previous years was well maintained.. All pastures had to be again judged in the autqmn, when the total points would indicate the placings of the pastures, but the first twenty pastures in the spring judging were as follows (points awarded were good grasses 30, clovers 25, freedom from inferior grasses 5, freedom from weeds 10, denseness of sward 15, evenness 15, total 100): F.
