The conditions of the remarkable will of the late Mr. Peter Stuckey Mitchell are being brought to the notice of the New South Wales Parliament. Mr. Mitchell was a wealthy grazier who died ten years ago and bequeathed nearly £250,000 for the physical improvement of the Australian race by means of yearly contests limited to ten males and fifteen females. The main test for males was to be physical fitness, honourable fulfilment of military obligations and ability to swim and ride horses, and the test was restricted to youths under the age of 21 years.. Females must have a knowledge of nursing and be capable of producing and rearing healthy babies. Both sexes must possess intellect, have a good understanding of the climatic and geographical conditions of Australia, of British literature and of specific portions of the Bible.
