CHAMPION DEFEATED

HAWERA OLD BOYS LOSE HAWERA WINS UNEXPECTEDLY. THRUSH DOES THE HAT TRICK. Ift one of the most exciting cricket matches at HaWOra for some time, Hawera defeated Old Boys by seven runs On the first innings. Only time robbed Old Boys of what appeared to be certain victory, though the honours of the match in any case would have gone to Hawera. Batting first, Hawera men went out in regular succession against the always steady bowling of Old Boys, and the total appeared very uninspiring. Worse followed for ,01d Boys, however, only Thrush making double figures in a score of 50. The debacle was chiefly due to remarkably steady bowling by Fleet. With a lead of seven runs On the first innings, Hawera attempted to play out time in their Second strike. Against Thrush’s brilliant bowlin., the task was hopeless, and the innings closed with 65 On the board. With 25 minutes to get the runs, Old Boys went all out, making a disastrous start with two wickets down for two runs. Thrush, Duke and W. Barker collected rubs in fine style and though the bowling was steady, the total crept nearer Hawera’s. Another over and the result could conceivably have been different.

The defeat was the first Old Boys has experienced this season. With such a string of batsmen, it would have had little difficulty in passing Hawdra’s total. The outstanding performance of the match was Thrush’s hat trick, closing Hawera’s second innings. He took one Wicket with the last ball of one over and the Other two with the first two balls of his next. Details are:— HAWERA. First Innings. Des Forges, CH.
