“THE RED INN.”
LAVISH AND COLOURFUL. Lavish and colourful frocking, original dance numbers, both ballets and solos, and attractive music go to make “The Red Inn,” which will be staged at the New Plymouth Opera House on Tuesday by Miss Marty Hawkins, one of the brightest entertainments of its kind ever produced in the town. The dancing is the main feature, and no trouble has been spared to bring the many items up to a remarkable standard. The curtain rises on the ballroom of Bellcroft, where Sir Robert Arnwood is entertaining in honour of his son Gerald, and the charming “picture frocks” of the twelve girls contrast with the gallant gold and scarlet uniforms of the men to make a spectacular opening as they dance the Minuet to the popular music of Johann Strauss. In billowy frocks of white and silver a ballet of tiny tots makes & captivating picture, and is followed by a very different style of thing in the “Dance of the Trees,” a dignified and beautiful movement of the “German Dance.” Rainbow colours in “The Waterfall,” a really poetic interpretation Of “The Silver King,” the charm of exquisite gowning in “The Muff Dance,” oriental splendour in the “Chinese Umbrella Dance,” the fire and romance of the Spanish gypsies in “The Spanish Shawl,” all go to make a kaleidoscopic procession of brilliant contrasts. Two of the special numbers of the evening are “Acrobatics,” by two amazingly agile and graceful children, and a ballet of 30 tap dancers in gingham check in “The Haymakers.” The final items are a vivacious “Village Dance” to the spirited Hungarian Rhapsody No. 5 (Brahms), and the celebrated “Dance of the Hours,” from Tschaikovsky’s Nut-Cracker Suite, interpreted by M. Hawkins and B. Nixon. Altogether the programme provides a feast of colourful scenes and artistic dancing that will long remain in the memory. Good reserved seats may be booked at Collier’s on Monday and Tuesday and day sales will be available only on Tuesday.
