DEFENCE OF EMPIRE

SIR M. HANKEY’S OBJECTS QUESTION IN COMMONS MR. MACDONALD’S REPLY NEWSPAPER’S SUGGESTION By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. ,Rec. 10 p.m. London, Nov. 14. Answering a Parliamentary question the Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, said that Sir Maurice Hankey’s visit to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand had no political object. He was visiting Australia as the guest of the Commonwealth Government for the Victorian centenary and had been invited by the Government of New Zealand to visit that Dominion.

Sir Maurice Hankey is secretary of the Committee of Imperial Defence and will discuss defence matters with the Governments.

The Daily Herald’s lobbyist describes Mr. MacDonald’s reply as an understatement. The paper says Sir Maurice’s tour is definitely not merely personal, he is discussing naval and military questions with each Dominion Government. His reported object is to induce them to increase their armaments and forces in an elaborate plan of Imperial war cooperation. “The question is being asked in the lobby why this ‘hush, hush’ pretence and the statement that the tour is purely private,” the paper adds.
