Southland is experiencing a protracted dry spell. October’s rainfall was only about half the average, and this month the fall has been negligible; with the result that the ground is becoming parched. Frequent strong northerlies have assisted in this process, and although they cannot compare with the old-time nor’-west-ers, which literally obscured the rising city in dense clouds of sandy dust, their effect is already perceptible on pastures.
