WOMEN’S DIVISION
Egmont Village: The Egmont Village branch held its November meeting at the residence of Mrs. G. Barnes on Wednesday last week. There was an excellent attendance and Mrs. Meuli presided. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. E. Robinson, whose little boy was badly scalded.. Hopes were expressed for his speedy recovery and return from hospital. Mesdames Meuli and Dryden and Miss Morton were appointed delegates to the provincial executive meeting. It was announced that the next meeting would be held at Mrs. A. Morton’s residence and that the competition would be for the best home-made soft toy. The president introduced Mr. McKee, of Kaimiro, and late of Belfast, who gave an interesting talk upon the manufacture of linen. Beginning from the raw material, he illustrated throughout with samples and gave a graphic description of the many processes through which it passes before attaining the pure specimen linen of which he had some very beautiful • examples. A vote, of thanks was accorded Mr. McKee. The competition was for the best decorated jam jar. It attracted five entries and was judged by Mrs. J. Morton and Miss Tippens, who awarded Mrs. Gordon Marsh s jar of scarlet shirley poppies first place and Miss Jean Morton’s jar of Iceland poppies second. The beautiful grounds and gardens were much admired, there being a wonderful display of flowering annuals, including a bed of choice pansies, while all odd corners and shady nooks were beautified with cinerarias of every colour. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn, the hostesses being Mesdames Barnes and Thomason.
Opunake: The monthly meeting of tne Women’s Division was held on Monday. Mrs. W. L. F. Chambers, presided over a large attendance.. Tire president thanked all who assisted fcVthe successful'egg drive. A special vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. F. Julian for her supervision of the clothing appeal. The secretary, Mrs. Shepherd, reported that the sum of £lO 10s was collected from the sale, of Blind Institute goods, and £3 12s from the sale of goods from disabled soldiers. The secretary also reported on the South Taranaki executive meeting at Hawera. Okoke: A meeting of the Okoke branch was held at the home of Mrs. C. V. Ekdahl, Piko, recently. Mrs, Whittaker, senr., presided. The roil call was “My Favourite Hobby.” The competition, the best school lunch, was won by Mrs. Barham. It was decided that a bring and buy sale of vegetables and eggs, etc., be held at every meeting as a means of increasing the funds. The sale of shrubs \’nd seedlings grown by the hostess realised an acceptable sum. Mrs. Barham’s offer of’ the use of her home for next meeting was accepted. Huiroa-Kiore: The November meeting of the branch took place on Thursday. Mrs. I. Williams presided . over an attendance of 19. Two members were enrolled. An account of the Central Taranaki executive meeting was given by Mrs. Taylor, as well as a summary of the poultry lecture which Mr. McAloon gave to the executive. A table cloth of punch work hand made by Chinese women was on exhibition, and was admired by lovers of fine, needlework. A competition for a set for a dressing table was won by Miss Blair, Mrs. F. Mitchell coming second and Mrs. Taylor- thin,. Mesdames Smith and Smith judged the needlework. Community singing was held. Mesdames Martin and Read were hostesses.
