SURPRISE VISIT BY DETECTIVES. FINES INFLICTED AT DUNEDIN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Nov. 12. James David Thomas Pearson was fined £lOO for keeping a gaming house. The police stated that on Friday when the Metropolitan trots were held at Christchurch detectives paid a surprise visit to Pearson’s house, where they found him in a room fitted as an office taking telephone bets. In the room were double charts, race cards and records of 60 bets. The sum of £39 was also found. Pearson had previously been fined £2O for bookmaking, £5O for street betting, and £lOO for keeping a gaming house. It was stated that he was one of the biggest bookmakers at Dunedin, if not in New Zealand. GAMING AT WANGANUI. TWO OFFENDERS PUNISHED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Nov. 12. Frank Sanko was fined £5O this morning by Mr. J. H. Salmon for keeping a common gaming house. Neville Bernard Hooker, -fox’ wilfully permitting the premises to be used for gaming, was fined £lO.
