END OF OLD HULK
SIXTY YEARS’ USEFULNESS. HISTORY OF COUNTESS. OF ERROL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Westport Coal Company’s. 61-years-old hulk Countess, of Errol, which is to be broken up,, was. to-day taken from its moorings and towed to Evans Bay, where it was beached. , The vessel was built at Peterhead, 'Scotland. It was a schooner of 218 tons.. Little is known, of its earlier history, but the. vessel was bought in Australia in 1907 by the Westport Coal Company for conversion into a coal hulk, for use at Westport. A certificate was granted by th© Navi.gation Department at. Sydney allowing the ship to make one trip to New Zealand with a cargo of 220 tons. It was held up at Newcastle for minor repairs, but made the voyage safely. For some time, the hulk has. lain at Queen’s Wharf, ■where it was partly dismantled..
