HEAT STOPS PLAY

CRICKET AT WHANGAMOMONA. TOWN PLAYS PUBLIC SERVICE. Public Service averted being defeated by Town on the Whangamomona domain at the week-end through the inability of Town to continue the second innings. Several Town players found the heat too severe and were unable to bat. leaving Public Service victorious by 42 runs. Town opened with J. Callaghan and A. Clarke, who knocked up 85 between them, Callaghan's 41 including three sixes. Freeboume added another 21. The bowling of Public Service lacked sting, ■while several easy catches were dropped by the fielders, who seemed affected by the heat. Public Service’s best batemen were Mason and Ewing, but they

failed to make the spectacular hits of the Town batsmen.
