NEW ZEALAND STATUS
EX-GOVERNOR’S FORGETFULNESS. EARL JELLICOE'S DILEMMA. Earl Jellicoe's forgetfulness resulted in cn incident at dinner at the May Fair Hotel, London, which caused nearly 200 international old comrades of the war to roar with laughter. As chairman of a dinner given in honour of the delegates to the fifth annual congress of the Federation Internationale Des Anciens Combattants, he was proposing the principal toast. He was remarking that when the conference last met in London, 10 years ago, he was in New Zealand. Suddenly he forgot the status of this country. “That delightful British —” he remarked, and then stopped. He asked Lady Edward Spencer-Churchill and Sir Frederick Maurice what exactly New Zealand was. The company remembered that only a few years ago Lord Jellicoe was a successful Governor-General of the Dominion. They laughed long and. heartily.
